THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN A SEDENTARY LIFESTYLE AND MENTAL HEALTH

Were you aware that leading an inactive lifestyle can negatively impact your mental health, and not just your physical health?

Studies have shown that leading a sedentary lifestyle can have negative impact with mental health. In a study led by Justin Dickerson, nearly 4000 adults were given a health assessment in which they self reported lifestyle behaviors. Respondents were 5% less likely to report positive mental health for each day per week that they did not engage in at least 10 minutes of moderate exercise. Additionally, respondents were 12% more likely to report poorer mental health for each additional hour per day that they watched TV.

Exercise, especially Aerobic exercise has been proven to reduce anxiety and depression. Activities such as jogging, swimming, cycling, walking, dancing, and even gardening can have positive effects on mental health. Exercise improves self esteem and cognitive function, which aids in reducing negative moods, depression, and anxiety.

Here are 9 health benefits that come from regular exercise:

  1. Improved sleep

  2. Stress Relief

  3. Better endurance

  4. Mood improvement

  5. Increased energy and stamina

  6. Reduced tiredness that can increase mental alertness

  7. Weight reduction

  8. Reduced cholesterol

  9. Improved cardiovascular fitness
